Hiking and Mountaineering

The San Juan Mountain Range is home to some of the best hiking in Colorado.  The largest group of mountains in Colorado, the San Juan Mountain range has 19 peaks over 13,000 feet.  Surrounding Ouray, the San Juan’s jagged topography creates ample opportunities for various mountain activities. From late spring to early fall, backpacking, mountaineering, rock climbing, and day hiking are very popular and easily accessible.  Ouray has over 65 hiking trails in the immediate area maintained by the Forest Service.  The Ouray Trails Group has an online guide, or you can purchase a book from Ouray Mountain Sports.
